Learning To Outsource What Wasn't Mine To Carry: Delegation For Athlete Entrepreneurs

Goalkeepers organize the backline whether it's official or not. You're the one player who can see the whole field in front of you, so you're constantly directing the players who can't see what you see — communicating fast, correcting positioning before it becomes a real problem.

Here's what that role teaches you, if you actually pay attention to it: you can see everything, but you can't play every position. You organize your center backs. You don't play center back for them. At some point you have to trust the read you gave them and let them execute it.

I did not bring that lesson with me when I started building a business. I brought the other instinct instead.

The Instinct That Almost Broke Me

There's a specific belief that gets drilled into you as a goalkeeper: everything that gets past you is your fault. Last line of defense, no one behind you to clean it up. It wins you games. It is a terrible operating system for running a company.

When I founded Prime Focus Goalkeeping, I brought that mentality with me — the belief that if I wasn't the one doing it, it wasn't going to get done right. Training content, day-to-day operations, outreach, the parts of running an actual business that have nothing to do with goalkeeping at all. I tried to organize everything the way I used to organize a backline, except I never let go and trusted anyone to actually play the position.

Delegation Isn't About Doing Less As Athlete Entrepreneurs

I want to be direct about what this pillar of FOCUS is not: it's not permission to coast. It's arguably harder than doing everything yourself, because it forces a question a lot of driven people avoid — what am I actually the best-positioned person to do, and what am I just used to doing because I've always done it?

Running Prime Focus and Miller Woods Capital at the same time made this unavoidable. There is not enough of one person to be excellent at both simultaneously. The moment I stopped treating that as a weakness and started treating it as information was the moment things actually got easier to build.

The Uncomfortable Math

Delegation for athlete entrepreneurs feels like loss before it feels like gain. You hand something off. You lose a little control. For a while it feels like you're doing less, the same way trusting your center back to make a read without you shouting instructions the whole time feels like less control in the moment.

Then you look up months later and realize the things you kept — the things that were actually yours to carry — got your full attention instead of a fraction of it. That's when the growth shows up.

Foundation tells you what's true about where you stand. Outsource tells you what you're allowed to put down, the same way a goalkeeper has to put down the instinct to play every position at once and trust the team they organized.
